Quick Tips: What to Do if Your Car is Stolen

Liz shares five important steps to take if you find yourself in the unfortunate position of being a victim of auto theft.

If you find yourself in the unfortunate position of being a victim of auto theft, follow these steps-

1.Take a moment to collect your thoughts to ensure your vehicle has really been stolen. Check to make sure that you didn’t park in a tow zone, or take a second to make sure that you’re not just on the wrong level of the parking garage (this happens more than you would think).

2. Call the police and file a report in which you tell them everything about your car—make and model, VIN number, and where it was last parked. If you aren’t sure about this information, it can be found on your auto insurance id cards which are located easily on Mackoul’s client portal.

3. Call your insurance company or insurance agent and make a claim regarding the theft. If you have comprehensive coverage you are in luck, as this is a covered peril.

4. Report the car stolen to the DMV.

5. If you want to be more proactive in your search, you can try searching for your car online on places like Craigslist and other aftermarket car sales websites. This could be a long shot but finding your stolen car for sale online isn’t impossible.
