Online Shopping Tips to Help You Save Money

By November 28, 2011April 15th, 2018General Updates

Happy Cyber Monday! Are you overwhelmed by the deals and steals bombarding you this weekend? While we can advise you everyday on how to save money on your insurance, today we’re going to let you in on an online shopping secret that saves time (and a lot of money). Read on for some very helpful and quick tips to find the best deals online. Hey, who doesn’t like to save money after all?

Whether you are scouring the web for a shiny new set of wrenches, a new handbag from Michael Kors, or a flight to the Caribbean, there are deals online just waiting to be utilized on basically anything you can purchase online. Before finalizing your online purchase, make it a priority to search the store or website name, or product name to see if there are active coupons you can put towards your purchase. In seconds, this tip can save you up to 30% off your purchase and at the very least get you free shipping or a free gift along with item you intended to buy (with no strings attached!!). What have you got to lose?

Find A Coupon Code (a.k.a. Promotional Code)

My number one resource for finding coupon codes is called retailmenot.com. Here is how you use this website:

  1. Visit the website: http://www.retailmenot.com
  2. Enter the store name in the area where it says “Search coupon codes for 140,000 stores” and then click the green “Search” button.
  3. A few small photos of websites will appear and you must choose the one that applies to your store.
  4. A new page will appear with Active and Inactive coupons. Search for a coupon code for your online purchase (at times, they also feature printable coupons you can bring to a store).

If your favorite store is not featured on Retailmenot.com, then you can also try searching for the product name or store name on a web browser. If you know how to search a web browser efficiently, such as Google.com, you may find just what you are looking for (For example: Type “Home Depot Coupon Code 2011” and a number of websites will be listed that are featuring coupon codes for the store you have entered in the Google search bar.)

Enter Coupon Code During Checkout at Your Favorite Online Retailer

Once you find a coupon code, write it down somewhere and hold it until you are ready to check out at your online retailer. For example, say you are looking for a new ceiling fan at The Home Depot. Go to the Home Depot website, find the ceiling fan that you would like to buy and put it in your online shopping cart. As you go through the process of placing your order, you will be given the option to insert a “promotional code” or “coupon code” before you finalize your order. (This option should be either in your online shopping cart, or it will be in the area where you enter your credit card information). Last night, I purchased a new ceiling fan and used the coupon code “CYBERHD” to save $5 and get free shipping. While this is not a lot of money, if you do this each time you make an online purchase it could really add up by the end of the year.

I hope that you’ve enjoyed today’s post and that it might save you a few bucks throughout the year. Have fun searching for your favorite stores to see if they are offering a discount but please… wait until you get home to utilize these online shopping tips. You will need an income to pay for the deals you’ve received on Cyber Monday and beyond!
