Are you looking for some fun ideas to plan your summer weekends? We put together a list of some of our favorite events in the area.

New York City

Shakespeare in the Park – You can’t beat free tickets and Shakespeare in the Park.  This annual festival is one of NYC’s most beloved summer traditions.

Where: Delacorte Theater

Central Park, NYC

The Central Park entrances closest to the theater are at 81st Street and Central Park West or 79th Street and Fifth Avenue.

HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival – Movies are shown on a large screen in Bryant Park at dusk on Monday nights from June through August.

Where: Bryant Park, NYC

Bryant Park is behind the New York Public Library in midtown Manhattan, between 40th and 42nd Streets & Fifth and Sixth Avenues.

When: Monday evenings through August 19. Access to the grass for blankets and picnicking is available at 5:00 p.m.

Film Forum’s Son of Summer Festival of Fantasy, Horror and Science Fiction – This downtown movie house is reviving its cinematic salute to creepy, geeky fare for the first time in 17 years.

Hudson River Park’s Blues BBQ – In its 14th year, this festival pairs blues music and BBQ for an unforgettable event.

Kayaking Classes at Downtown Boathouse Enjoy free kayaking classes on the Hudson River.

Long Island

US Open – For two weeks, Flushing Meadows–Corona Park will be the tennis capital of the world for the US Open 2013.

Long Island International Film Expo – The Long Island Film/TV Foundation and the Nassau County Film Commission present the 16th Annual Long Island International Film Expo at Bellmore Movies.

Country Fest Long Island – This two day family-friendly event has live country music and will be featuring 12 of Long Island’s country bands.

Market at the Milleridge Village – This weekly market showcases crafts, artisan foods, produce and local artists.

Manhasset Summer Festival – Enjoy arts and crafts, antiques and food. The festival is held rain or shine.

New Jersey

Oakland Farmers’ Market – The Oakland Farmers’ Market runs every week from June through October. It has local farms, music and crafts.

Summer Concert Series – Enjoy a free concert in the park – what’s not to love about this?

Where: Duke Island Park

Monmouth County Fair – This county fair has rides, vendors, fireworks, shows and competitions.

Where: East Freehold Park & Show Grounds

New Jersey State Fair/Sussex County Farm & Horse Show – New Jersey’s Largest Agricultural Fair features agricultural events and education exhibits, a petting zoo, vendors, crafts, flower & vegetable shows, art & photography exhibits, fair food, free entertainment, and more.
