Lance Armstrong: A True American Inspiration

By August 11, 2011April 15th, 2018General Updates

He won his fight with cancer and surged ahead to win the Tour de France 7 times. For many reasons, Lance Armstrong stands as a true source of inspiration in America and all over the world. Today’s post highlights Armstrong’s achievements and contributions to society, and we will also list some of his most motivational quotes to encourage you to fight until you reach your goals.

Many of you know Lance Armstrong for being an athletic man who won his fight against cancer, but what you may not know is just how serious was his prognosis? At 25 years old, Armstrong was diagnosed with stage three testicular cancer that had spread to his lungs, abdomen and brain. After surgery, his doctor stated that he had less than a 40% survival chance (www.wikipedia.org). Given news like that, some people would lose hope or give up, but not Lance Armstrong. Instead, he took charge of his care and treatment and maintained a healthy lifestyle. His cancer treatments included brain and testicular surgery and extensive chemotherapy. Two years later, he was in complete remission and in training for serious racing again. This is truly an inspirational story even if his story ended here… but Armstrong moves forward to achieve even more in his life.

Tour de France

Among his many athletic achievements, his most notable is his success with the Tour de France. From 1999 until 2005, Armstrong won the Tour de France a record of 7 times after battling testicular cancer. Armstrong also ran the New York City Marathon in 2006, 2007 & 2008 finishing in the top 500 racers in 2008. For this, he has become symbolic of perseverance for his tenacity to “live strong.”

The Lance Armstrong Foundation and Livestrong

Founded in 1997, The Lance Armstrong Foundation became most famous through their yellow “Livestrong” fundraising wristbands that unintentionally became a fashion must-have in 2004. However, the foundation’s purpose goes much further: to provide support for people affected by cancer and their families. Upon visiting the Livestong website, you can view the available information and tools that they have provided for cancer sufferers on various topics such as eating healthy to navigating the health system.

Mackoul & Associates applauds Lance and the efforts he has made to help people and ultimately make the world a better place. In the words of our own CEO, Robert E. Mackoul, “Lance Armstrong is a winner in every sense of the word, and an example to everyone who has to overcome overwhelming odds to achieve success or reach their goals.”

Here are some of his motivational quotes:

  1. “Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever. That surrender, even the smallest act of giving up, stays with me. So when I feel like quitting, I ask myself, which would I rather live with?”
  2. “If children have the ability to ignore all odds and percentages, then maybe we can all learn from them. When you think about it, what other choice is there but to hope? We have two options, medically and emotionally: give up, or Fight…”
  3. “I believed in belief, for its own shining sake. To believe in the face of utter hopelessness, every article of evidence to the contrary, to ignore apparent catastrophe – what other choice was there? We are so much stronger than we imagine, and belief is one of the most valiant and long-lived human characteristics. To believe, when all along we humans know that nothing can cure the briefness of this life, that there is no remedy for our basic mortality, that is a form of bravery. To continue believing in yourself…believing in whatever I chose to believe in, that was the most important thing.”
