With the stay at home orders likely extending a little longerit’s important to find ways to stay active.  Here are some ways you can mix up your workout routine:

Fitness Scavenger Hunt

Mix up your workout routine bgetting outside and adding some bodyweight exercises to your typical walking or jogging route.  Map out your route and list 10 landmarks that you might pass (ex: park bench, mailbox, playground, basketball hoop, etc.) associated with 10 exercises (ex: jumping jacks, squats, burpees).  For example, every time you pass a park bench, you’ll do 10 jumping jacks.

Utilize What You Have

You’d be surprised how many household items can add some weight to your “home gym”.  Did you know a gallon of milk or water weighs over eight pounds?  Get those bicep curls pumping or use as a kettlebell replacement.  Towels or paper plates make great sliders. Start in plank pose with each foot on a “slider” and slide one foot out at a time.  For a challenge, glide both feet in towards the hands while lifting your hips up into the air.  You’ll be sure to feel the abs burn! Pack a backpack with anything that’ll add weight (ex: canned goods, water bottles) and get some squats in. No weights? No problem!

Get Your Kids Involved and Outside

Create an obstacle course in your backyard with chalk and add in some mental and physical challenges to keep the kids on their toes.  Add in some activities like jump rope, handstands and wheelbarrow and you’ll be sure to get a sweat on too!

Support Local

Look into local gyms and studios that may offer live stream classes so you can get some guidance for your workouts.  You’ll feel good about getting a workout in and supporting a local business.

Keep it Short and Sweet

Don’t have time for a 30 minute or hour-long workout?  Short workouts can still offer plenty of benefits for the mind and body.  Check out these 5-7 minute workouts to get started.  Anything is better than nothing.

Free Streaming Workout Classes

From HIIT classes and strength training to yoga and Zumba, there really is an app for everyone. A quick search, and you’ll find a plethora of free workouts you can try at home.  A silver lining to the pandemic is that many brands are offering free workouts in response to stay at home orders.  Our latest discovery: Amazon Prime members can get their sweat on for free included with their membership

What’s most important is finding an activity or exercise that you feel comfortable with and that you enjoy.  Staying active isn’t just about losing weight, but making a conscious effort to bring a sense of structure to your day and mindfulness into your life during these uncertain times.
